Arts Education Awards Announced! – RPAA

RPAA is excited to honor three individuals from the arts community who exemplify a strong commitment to the positive impact of arts education in the greater Richmond region. The official awards presentation will take place during the event on November 7 at Dominion Energy Center.

The SUPPORT AWARD, sponsored by Genworth, is given to a teaching artist who models high-quality arts integration in their residencies, in SUPPORT of classroom teachers. The NURTURE AWARD, sponsored by Atlantic Union Bank, is given to a performing arts educator who NURTURES the artists of tomorrow through exemplary arts instruction in the K-12 classroom. The THRIVE AWARD, sponsored by Kinsale, is given to a leader in arts education who creates spaces in the community for the arts to THRIVE.

David ‘Lyve’ Watkins is a Richmond native who has traveled the world as a professional singer and musician, an equity actor on stage and film, and an educator. David has been a teaching artist with RPAA via Greater Richmond Wolf Trap (GRWT) for 4 years, and absolutely loves to bring his experiences of the stage to the classroom and help awaken the spirit of the arts in every little heart he encounters. He is grateful to be a lead teaching artist with GRWT’s Baby Artsplay!™ where he is able to introduce infants and toddlers to the power of music, singing, and the arts.

Amaris C. Franklin is a dedicated music educator and clarinetist from Henrico, Virginia. Amaris has spent 12 years fostering a love of music in young minds. She taught elementary music in Petersburg, Virginia, for 6 years, followed by 6 years teaching middle school band in Henrico. Additionally, Amaris performs with various local bands and theater groups. Her passion for music is driven by  sharing joy with her community and future generations, empowering them to use music as a tool in their everyday lives, and as a catalyst to push them towards their dreams.

Betsy Hart is the Founding Executive Director at Robinson Theater Community Arts Center with 16 years invested in encouraging the East End neighborhood toward healthy community living, experiencing arts & culture and finding a place to belong. Betsy graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications and has learned exponentially more living in and among the community as a dedicated employee, neighbor and mom of East End Richmond Public School students.
