Complete Works to replace Jesus Christ Superstar – Richmond Shakespeare

By | December 22, 2024
Richmond Shakespeare has made the difficult decision to indefinitely postpone our scheduled production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

We understand the disappointment this will cause to our patrons and the artists engaged in this production. The decision was made with much deliberation between our board and staff, and is the only option that will ensure the long-term success of Richmond Shakespeare.

We are so proud of our accomplishments in 2024, including acclaimed productions of Born with Teeth, Into the Woods, Much Ado About Nothing, Doctor Faustus, and Lord of the Flies and a record number of nominations and wins at this year’s Richmond Theatre Community Circle Awards. However, like theatres across the country and here in RVA, we have faced a challenging year financially. Some of the factors involved include higher cost of productions due to inflation, our commitment to raising compensation for artists, and lower than expected box office revenue.
While this is hard news to deliver, we are optimistic about the future and excited to announce a new production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] [again], March 13 – 30, 2025 at Dominion Energy Center’s Gottwald Playhouse. The cultural touchstone was born when three inspired, charismatic comics, having honed their pass-the-hat act at Renaissance fairs, premiered their preposterous masterwork at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1987. It quickly became a worldwide phenomenon, earning the title of London’s longest-running comedy after a decade at the Criterion Theatre. Complete Works is one of the world’s most frequently produced plays and has been translated into several dozen languages. Featured are all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays, meant to be performed in 97 minutes, by three actors. Fast paced, witty, and physical, it’s full of laughter for Shakespeare lovers and haters alike.

Season Members can reserve their tickets now to Complete Works. Single tickets sales for this production will be announced soon and make the perfect holiday gift. While you’re spreading holiday cheer, consider adding a tax-deductible donation at checkout. Your generous support helps us bring the magic of Shakespeare to even more audiences and keep the arts thriving in our community. Thank you for your continued support of RVA’s home for classic theatre.

Happy Holidays,
Richmond Shakespeare
